The Jurassic Coast is keen to encourage more young people to get involved in the conservation and interpretation of the World Heritage Site.

The work experience I did with you at the Bristol Festival of Nature actually proved to be a key subject area in my personal statement. I was able to talk about paleoanthropology, and how, we as a team were aiming to encourage children to become interested in looking at fossils and artifacts!                        Sophie, Age 18

In the past we have accepted students looking for work experience placements as part of a course of learning. These can include (but are not limited to) GCSE's, Diplomas, A-Levels, PGCE, Undergraduate and Masters degrees. Previous placement students working with the Jurassic Coast Team have:

• Created foreign language podcasts on the Jurassic Coast for our website
• Helped to design educational resources
• Assisted team members to deliver activities at public events
• Conducted research using GIS to analyse the retreat rate of cliffs on the Jurassic Coast
• Mapped the locations of wave cut platforms using high resolution GPS to monitor future erosion
• Spent a week at Durlston Country Park to help on conservation projects
• As part of a PGCE, spent a week at Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre to experience 'Learning Outside the Classroom' 

A work experience placement can often lead to other achievements!  Tom Hearing, an A-Level student at the Thomas Hardye School (pictured in this photo) recently won the UK Young Scientist of the Year 2010 award based on his original research with the Jurassic Coast Team and Bournemouth University where he used high precision GPS to map the erosion of the ammonite pavement at Monmouth Beach near Lyme Regis. Tom's placement was funded by the Nuffield Foundation as part of a national programme to encourage more young people into scientific careers.
