The Jurassic Coast Fossil Dig box is an exciting and innovative way to bring experiential learning about the rocks and fossils of the Jurassic Coast into the classroom. The Fossil Dig roughly measures 1m2, and contains high quality replica fossils that are fixed to the bottom of the box. The fossils are mostly Jurassic in age, and include a baby Ichthyosaur, ammonites, belemnites, fish, brittlestars and a piece of fossilised sea lily (crinoid). The fossils are covered by sand, which is then gently brushed away using paintbrushes. This simple activity can be delivered at a variety of levels from Early Years to KS2 and accompanying discussions and associated work can be adjusted according to learning ability. The Fossil Dig Box accompanies the KS2/3 learning pack, Rocks and Fossils of the Jurassic Coast.
There are two Fossil Digs available for hire from Devon Learning Resources and Dorset Schools Library Service. They come fully resourced with playsand, paintbrushes and instructions for use. Although the Jurassic Coast provides the Fossil Dig free of charge to schools, there may be a small delivery and set up fee with the hire of the resource.
Alternatively if you are visiting the Jurassic Coast, you can book a Fossil Dig session at the following Education centres:
