Jurassic Coast

Annual Seminar 14 December 2011 Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis

10 years of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site

Jurassic Coast Annual Seminar, December 14th 2011
Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis, 2.30 - 4.30 pm. Refreshments from 2pm

Please join us for an afternoon to celebrate 10 years of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and to explore future opportunities and challenges

We are delighted to have three outstanding guest speakers this year:

Tim Badman, Director - World Heritage Programme, IUCN

Tim was part of the bid team responsible for securing the World Heritage Status for the Dorset and East Devon Coast.  He went on to manage the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Team for a number of years before becoming Environment Policy Manager for Dorset County Council, and then moving to work for IUCN as their lead for World Heritage.  Lyme Regis is Tim's home town.

Tim will be talking to the title "Jurassic Coast, thinking globally..."

Poul Christensen CBE, Chair, Natural England

Natural England is the government's advisor on the natural environment, and Poul has been Chair of the organisation since 2009.  He is senior partner of a successful family dairy farming business in Oxfordshire, and has a long track record of integrating conservation with the demands of modern farming. Throughout his career Poul has taken a prominent role leading the farming sector through changing and challenging times, including overseeing the launch of modern Environmental Stewardship schemes.  Poul knows the Jurassic Coast well, having farmed in the Bride Valley, and sailed along the coast many times.

Poul will be talking about "The value of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site".

Tim Smit KBE, Co-founder and Chief Executive of the Eden Project

After a career in the music industry Tim moved to Cornwall, where he and John Nelson together ‘discovered' and then restored the Lost Gardens of Heligan.  Tim then co-founded the award-winning Eden Project near St Austell, and is still its Chief Executive.  Eden opened its doors to the public in 2000 , since when around 13 million people have come to see what was once a sterile pit turned into a cradle of life containing world-class horticulture and startling architecture that is symbolic of human endeavour. Tim is a Trustee, Patron and Board Member of a number of statutory and voluntary bodies both locally and nationally.  He knows the Jurassic Coast well and is particularly involved as a special advisor for the proposed MEMO project on Portland.

Tim will be talking around the title "The Jurassic Coast; the next 10 years".

They have created work for and about the Jurassic Coast over the last 6 years, and promise that they are trying really really hard to understand the geology and geomorphology underpinning the Site's Outstanding Universal Value.  They will be talking about a new commission and performing a short, and very well known piece live.
