Continuing Challenges

Funding for the acquisition of specimens is limited as is the space and curatorial skills within most local museums. Many collectors, and others, would like to see these specimens on display locally and the World Heritage Team is working with others to explore this possibility. The links between collectors and academics need continued development. One or two collectors continue to dig in the cliffs to a limited extent, contrary to the code and landowner's wishes.

A site based approach to the management of fossil sites

The rationale behind the code has been set in context within a paper advocating a site based approach to the management of all types of fossil sites. This is a consultation paper and is accessible at:

Other potential threats to the geo-diversity of the World Heritage Site include pebble extraction, oil exploration, pollution and quarrying. These are dealt with in the World Heritage Management plan and involve other organisations in management and consideration of the Site.

Threats to geodiversity inland are covered in the Dorset Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites (RIGS) web site and Dorset Local Geodiversity Action Plan (LGAP) .
