Competition Launched to Help Keep the South West Special

Get to Make and Name Your Own Ice Cream Flavour and Help Keep the South West Special

Future Footprints is inviting children to draw their ‘best day out in the South West' - for a chance to make and name their own ice cream!

The postcard competition, to be launched on Monday, 23 July at Withycombe Raleigh Primary School in Exmouth, is raising awareness of the small steps we can take while on holiday or days out that help keep the South West special

The competition runs throughout the summer holidays, and is open to children all of ages who live in or are visiting the South West. Postcards will be available from local Tourist Information Centres, some main line train stations, hotels, holiday camps, B&Bs and attractions around the region (see the Future Footprints website, www.futurefootprints.org.uk)

The overall winner will be invited to Roskilly's ice cream factory, where they will have the chance to make their own ice cream flavour, which will be named in their honour, and take home the results! Other prizes include tickets to top South West attractions and other surprises.

Future Footprints, the region's sustainable tourism project, helps visitors and residents to ‘Keep the South West Special' -by looking out for local food and drink on holiday, and exploring days out by rail, water, two wheels or foot.

Every year more than 25 million visitors come to the South West of England, that's four times the region's population. Future Footprints believes that local people and the tourism industry can make this level of tourism sustainable by asking visitors to take small steps which add to their experience and help protect the very reason that people choose the South West - our outstanding landscape and environment.

Project manager Clare Mitchell explains, "When visitors choose local food and drink they are helping to protect the countryside - and  also cutting down on ‘food miles', the distance food has to travel to our plate. The campaign also encourages visitors to choose fun days out by train bus, foot or bike and to explore local events and attractions that are ‘on their doorstep' - so no-one has to spend hours in the car."

Future Footprints will be inviting year 1 classes at Withycombe Raleigh Primary School in Exmouth, to draw their best day out.

The competition closes on 14 September 2007. For more information about the competition and full details of the prizes on offer, please visit www.futurefootprints.org.uk
