Have your say on the Jurassic Coast Management Plan

The deadline for feedback has now expired

Do you value the World Heritage Site? How do you use it? What does it mean to you and your community? What are your concerns?

The Dorset and East Devon Coast, also known as the Jurassic Coast, was made a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on December 13th 2001.

The Steering Group responsible for the Site has undertaken a formal review of the document that sets out how it is managed.  This draft Management Plan, last updated in 2003, is required by UNESCO and the British Government and covers the period 2009 to 2014.

The Plan will enable the Steering Group to respond to threats and issues as they arise and help to steer a wide range of activities that can benefit the people of Dorset, Devon and the UK.

UNESCO assert that World Heritage Sites are so important, that they "transcend political boundaries" and therefore become everybody's responsibility to protect and conserve for future generations.

The most important people for the future protection, conservation and use of the Dorset and East Devon Coast are those who live or work on or near it, and visit and enjoy it.  This Management Plan is in draft form in order that anyone with an interest in the Site locally or globally, can have a say in its management.

The Plan is available for download below, but please call or email us if you need us to send you a hard copy.  Alternatively go to one of the following libraries: Exeter, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Seaton, Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Bridport, Burton Bradstock, Chickerell, Portland Tophill, Portland Underhill, Dorchester, Wyke Regis, Weymouth, Wool, Swanage, Wareham and Poole, where there will be copies available for reference, and some to take away.

To let us know what you think, please use the questionnaire below - hard copies are available from the same places as described above.  If you do not wish to use the questionnaire, please just send us your thoughts or comments by email or letter.

Assessing the Plan's impacts on the environment and its sustainability

As part of the Management Plan Review process the Draft Plan has been subject to assessments of its potential environmental effects and its sustainability. These assessments are presented alongside the Plan, as part of the consultation.

The Draft Management Plan has undergone a Strategic Environmental Assessment, or SEA for short. The SEA is to ensure that implementing the Plan will not lead to any significant adverse effects on the environment. The assessment findings and recommendations are presented in an Environmental Report for public consultation. This report also includes an appraisal of the sustainability of the Plan.

There is a full Environmental Report, and a Non-Technical Summary that can be downloaded separately.

Protecting nature conservation sites

The local authorities cannot adopt the Plan until they are certain that it will not have significant effects on certain sites that are important for nature conservation in a European context, known as 'European sites'. The Habitats Regulations Assessment Screening Report assesses the impact of implementing the Plan on these European sites.

Have your say

To let us know what you think about the impact on the environment, please use the questionnaire below (these are different to the consultation questions on the contents of the Plan itself). If you do not wish to use the questionnaire, please just send us your thoughts or comments by email or letter.
