Monitoring

The World Heritage Site is monitored by Natural England (formally English Nature) through the English Nature Site Information System (ENSIS). This examines individual ‘ENSIS units', within Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI's), typically defined by land ownership. The state of conservation for each unit is valued as being of ‘favourable' or  ‘unfavourable' status and this is determined by a series of generic questions that are aimed to measure the quality of the exposure.

The results of site monitoring are available at Natural England's web site:

However, the geological interest within the World Heritage Site is defined by the Geological Conservation Review (GCR) sites and these may extend across many units and even different SSSI's. Therefore The World Heritage Team, Natural England and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee have developed a combined database using SSSI, ENSIS and GCR units to bring together monitoring systems in one place. This monitoring data is currently not available on line.
