Radcliffe and Maconie rock the Jurassic Coast

Radio 2 DJs Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie will be rocking out in Dorset and East Devon this week when they set out to trek the spectacular Jurassic Coast.

In 2009, the pair conquered Hadrian's Wall, presenting their popular evening show along the route. This year, the proud northerners head south to embark on a bold new challenge, walking more than 80 miles of England's only natural World Heritage Site.

Starting at Lulworth Cove in Dorset on Friday 24 September, Mark and Stuart will head westwards along the Southwest Coast Path National Trail by day, stopping en route to broadcast four live shows from various venues in Dorset and East Devon.

The intrepid duo will be taking in the Jurassic Coast's dramatic cliffs, spectacular arches and sea stacks, together with the beautifully preserved fossils that contributed to its designation as a World Heritage Site in 2001.

Each show will feature audio snapshots of their adventure, as well as live session guests including Billy Bragg, Eliza Doolittle, Show Of Hands, Squeeze, Edwyn Collins and Fisherman's Friends.

Mark and Stuart will also be joined by experts from the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site team, who will give insights into the 185 million years of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous geological time exposed in a near continuous sequence along the coast.

The presenters should reserve some energy to look out for fossils when they reach the beaches of Lyme Regis and Charmouth. Fossil finds on the Jurassic Coast have included a near-complete, three-metre skeleton of the dinosaur Scelidosaurus, a species unique to this part of the coast.

Their epic adventure is going to be quite a challenge, covering 10 to 15 miles a day with plenty of steep cliffs along the way. However, they will be rewarded with fabulous views and some welcome sustenance at various Dorset and East Devon hostelries en route.

Sally King, Jurassic Coast visitor manager, said:

"We're really excited that Mark and Stuart have chosen to explore the Jurassic Coast on foot. It's a great opportunity to promote walking along this amazing World Heritage Site.  The best thing is, by walking the Jurassic Coast, you are, quite literally, walking through time."

The Radcliffe and Maconie Show will be live from the Jurassic Coast between 8-10pm from Monday 27 to Thursday 30 September on Radio 2, 88-91FM. Mark and Stuart's live evening broadcasts are not open to the public, but listeners can chart their progress online at the BBC Radio 2 website.
