Local builder Rok teamed up with the Jurassic Coast Trust to support their annual Jurassic Coast summer clean at the beaches of Burton Bradstock, Cogden and West Bexington on Chesil Beach. Chesil Beach stretches from Portland to West Bay and forms part of the Jurassic Coast.
A team from Rok's Yeovil office and the Trust, together with families and friends, met at 2pm at the beach car parks and were joined by many local people of all ages. People from Yeovil turned up in force as well as those who simply walked down the road, and even those in the car park who made an on-the-spot decision to spend the afternoon helping.
The beach clean kicked off with an introduction and briefing from the National Trust and Dorset Countryside coastpath rangers, after which each volunteer was furnished with gloves and a rubbish bag and the litter picking soon got underway. Despite the strong winds determined to blow the rubbish out of the bags, they quickly began to fill up with any number of things from underwear to plastic bottles and fluorescent light tubes!
Nikki Greenleaf, executive officer of the Jurassic Coast Trust, says: "We were delighted that Rok chose to support the Jurassic Coast Trust in our first annual beach clean and that staff volunteered their time on our World Heritage coast, helping to protect and conserve this exceptional place for all to enjoy. We are hoping to attract even more volunteers next year and to cover the entire Jurassic Coast within five years. So if you are keen to volunteer next time, and perhaps set up a team on a beach near you, we will organise it for you as part of our annual event. In order to keep our beaches in good condition we need as many people to help as possible so we look forward to hearing from you!"
Steve Bradley of Rok Yeovil, says: "We want to give communities the skills to conserve and protect the landscape they will eventually inherit, and supporting the Jurassic Coast Trust in cleaning up the beaches along the Jurassic Coast, is just our first step. We are also looking forward to working with local communities on a number of the Trust's projects over the next few years, as more of our offices get involved."
